Intersection of SW 80th Street and SW 80th Avenue
The traffic engineering office of Marion County called and asked that a warrant analysis be performed based on the recent number of accidents and the increasing volume of complaints about the intersection.

Many of our residents have inquired about a traffic signal being installed at SW 80th Street and SW 80th Avenue. A traffic consultant, at the request of Marion County, has been hired to initiate a traffic study for that intersection. Depending on the data derived from traffic counts, there may not be adequate signal warrant requirements to justify a signal at this time. These requirements are found in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices published by the US Department of Transportation / Federal Highway Administration, and they dictate whether a traffic signal will be installed or left in operation. Per the manual, a traffic control signal should not be installed unless one or more of the signal warrants are met. Even then, an engineering study is required and must indicate the installation of a traffic signal will improve the overall safety and/or operation of the intersection. There are 11 Warrants to analyze and include the following: Vehicular Volume; Pedestrian Volume; Accident Experience; School Crossings; Peak Hour Delay; Peak Hour Volume; Interruption of Continuous Traffic, a Combination of Warrants, etc. We will keep you updated as the study progresses.

Safety Tips for Walkers, Joggers, and Drivers:
A number of residents have asked me to remind walkers to remember to wear light clothing when walking before dawn or after dusk.  Shorter winter days force many to run and walk in the dark. Below are some tips taken from the web on how to run and walk safely when it is dark outside and safety tips for seeing and being seen.  These tips apply to bicyclists as well as pedestrians.

To see, simply carry a flashlight.  Particularly when running, most people don’t want to carry the extra weight.  Modern LED flashlights or small Mag light flashlights are more compact for the amount of light they provide. 

Runners need to be seen and should wear reflective clothing.  First, avoid dark colored clothing.  Light colors reflect more light.  Light colored clothing is a good start but modern, highly reflective clothing that is designed for maximum nighttime visibility is much better.  There are several high tech reflectivity options:  Buy reflective tape that is designed to reflect light back to its source.  Apply this tape liberally to your exercise clothing.  Drivers from any direction will see the bright strips.  Wear a reflective safety vest, similar to those worn by highway workers.  It can be worn over exercise clothing to allow drivers to see a bright human outline.  It can be worn with any exercise outfit and does not require modifying your clothing.  Many sports clothing companies sell exercise apparel made of highly reflective fabrics.  Adding LED safety lights with any of these options will increase your visibility. 

If you are operating your golf cart before dawn or after dusk, remember you must have, at a minimum, a windshield, headlights, turn signals, and brake lights.  The Marion County Ordinance mandates these items to operate before sunrise and after sunset.

As you are out driving or walking in the early morning or early evening hours please be aware of traffic, whether it is foot traffic or other vehicles.  The sun can be blinding at these times and we may not see walkers or bicyclists.  So, please drive safely and watch out for others sharing the roadways.  Walkers and bicyclists should wear appropriate colored clothing for time of day and may want to consider safety reflective vests.

Don’t let winter’s early darkness disrupt your walking, running, or bicycling, but please take the proper precautions.

99th St. Road Construction/Golf Cart Striping
The 99th St. Rd. entrance will be under going road construction for approximately two weeks barring bad weather.  The project is slated for October 6th – 17th.  On October 13th and 15th one outgoing lane will be closed and October 14th and 16th one incoming lane will be closed.  While we are under going road construction and whenever convenient, please use the Candler or the 90th Street gate to avoid delays during this time.  We appreciate your patience as we work to improve our entry and stripe golf cart paths.

Yalaha Bakery 2 coming to Circle Square Commons
We are pleased to announce that Yalaha Bakery 2 is coming to Circle Square Commons.  On Tuesday, July 1st, Sid’s was closed to make way for Yalaha to move in.  Yalaha should be open for business one month from now.  Please stay tuned in the coming weeks for Yalaha’s menu that will include breakfast and lunch items in addition to their already famous breads, pastries, coffees and much more.  We thank you for your past patronage to Sid’s Coffee Shop and welcome Yalaha Bakery 2 to Circle Square Commons.

Someone is calling claiming to be with the Marion County Sheriff's Office asking for a donation for the Narcotics Abuse Awareness Education Fund. The caller may identify himself as Paul Boros. THIS CALL IS A FRAUD! Hang up and call 732-9111 to report the event.

Construction Gate - 90th Street - Temporary Closure
The Construction Gate at 90th St. will be closed May 5th and 6th due to road construction.  It will reopen May 7th. Large vehicles will be rerouted through the Candler Gate during this time.

URGENT! PLEASE READ!
Marion County Detectives are looking for a suspect who is targeting elderly persons in a financial fraud scandal. The unknown man calls the residence claiming to be a Wachovia Bank representative and requests assistance in the investigation of an employee at Wachovia responsible for financial fraud. The caller instructs the victim to withdraw several thousand dollars and meet him busy commercial location such as the Wal-Mart Super Center on HWY 200. One resident did indeed withdraw the instructed amount and proceeded to the shopping area, however became suspicious after the alleged bank representative did not show up. She then called authorities and found out this was a scheme. Another resident became a victim because the caller showed up and took the money. Don't be duped, call the Detective Bureau at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP should you be suspicious of fraudulent behavior.

First Farmer’s Market kicks off at The Town Square
Many residents came out and enjoyed the excitement of the opening of The Town Square and mentioned the great opportunity to meet people, mingle and listen to the music. The colorful painted carts and umbrellas added a special touch and the square opening was official. As predicted, Yalaha Country Bakery was a huge success and sold out of every item early in the morning.

BEWARE - Potential Deed Scam
Many residents may be receiving letters from an organization called Fast Deeds stating that property owners should have a certified copy of their deed.  Our residents should be wary of this communication as our buyers receive the original recorded warranty deed approximately one month after closing.  The recorded deed is also part of the Clerk of the Court's records which may be viewed on the Marion County Clerk of the Court website.
